Why do I need a Will?

Considering our own mortality is generally not a pleasant activity however the reality is that we are all going to die and, with few exceptions, we don't know when.

Dying without a Will can cause significant difficulties for those left behind. It could also mean that your estate will not go where you wanted it too and, in extreme circumstances, could even go to the Crown. A great many people put off making a Will

Who needs to make a Will?

The simple answer is everyone but it is especially important for:

• people with dependent relatives;

• people who own property;

• people who have specific wishes regarding certain assets.

But won’t everything go to my spouse or partner, parents and children automatically?

Probably not. There are specific rules that deal with the distribution of a deceased person's estate where that person died intestate (i.e. without a valid Will). If you die intestate you have no control over what happens to your assets.

Who ultimately inherits your assets will depend on several factors including the size of your estate, the makeup of your family, whether you are married, have children, brothers, sisters, etc.
